Jan Muisers

Hi , there.
I’m Jan Muisers and I live in a small town in the south off Holland.

I started fishing when I was 8 years old, some 40 years ago. My father took me out with his boot and from that time on I wanted to fish. The first time alone was with a bamboo rod. Simple, cheap stick…My first bite…and I hit it so hard, the rod broke. I had to ask for a new one and he bought me a good one, but I had to promise him, I kept on fishing. I feel very happy about the fact that I could keep that promise until now and I hope for many more years to come.

I was introduced with fly fishing on a holiday trip to Sweden about 17 years ago. Soon after that I started to tie my own flies. I liked tying but because I use only a few patterns for fishing, I wanted to try something more. My interest laid in the realistic flies and with a little push from Aarne, thank you my friend, for that, I started tying realistic flies. Just for the fun of it.

I do not use them for fishing, because the normal patterns I use, work well for me. My main fly is the Klinkhammer…My main gaol is to catch a 50+ ( cm.) grayling on that fly. Not with a streamer and not with a nymph, but with a dry fly. Its hard to get one of that size to the surface…but that’s the challenge.

I entered my fist and only competition fly in the Mustad Scandanavian Open in 2007 . It was the Flying Gryllotalpa and it became third place. It was very much fun to make that fly. A lot of work, but that is not important in realistic tying. It takes many hours to complete a fly but that is the nice part of it. Many hours at the vice…creating something…thinking about what to use and how to use it…tare it apart if not good and start again. And when the fly is finished make someone happy with it and start all over again.

To be sure my interests go out to not only the realistic part off tying. Being on TAOFT means that you have a lot of good salmon fly tiers and you can’t avoid those beautiful flies they make. They are not only good at it but they are also very friendly and helpful if you need any advise. Actually all the members here are very friendly and helpful. That is, why I believe…no.. KNOW…. that this is a fun place to be.

Here is my The Gryllotalpa step by steps.
If you open the link at there is 168 photos, so you have to wait for opening... Sorry!
